Best Keyboardists In Music - Round 1 REVISED

Posted on: July 1, 2008 11:27 am
Edited on: July 1, 2008 11:29 am

Welcome to The Bakery!  For those of you who posted in the preliminary round, welcome back!  To those of you here for the first time, we are deciding the title of "Greatest Keyboardist Ever - As Chosen By The Members Of The CBS Sportsline Community."  A big thank you to everyone who participated in the first round!

In the preliminary round, 85 different keyboardists were mentioned.  Every keyboardist mentioned in someone's top ten received one vote.  Other "Honorable Mentions" received 1/2 a vote.  To see the preliminary round blog, click here: http://www.sportsline.com/mcc/blogs/entry/8737312/8965841.

Knoxvillepat, Rhino3434, and iamayanksfan have very kindly pointed out mistakes that I made.  These mistakes change almost all of the matchups, so I am starting Round 1 over.  Sorry for the inconvenience.  Changes are in bold.  Without further ado, here are the results of Round 1:

Rick Wakeman received 14 votes,

Stevie Wonder received 10 votes,

Keith Emerson received 9.5 votes,

Ray Manzarek received 7.5 votes,

Elton John received 7 votes,

Herbie Hancock received 6 votes,

Al Kooper and Jon Lord received 5.5 votes,

Steve Winwood and Jerry Lee Lewis received 5 votes,

Billy Preston, Tony Banks, and Leon Russell received 4.5 votes,

Chick Corea received 4 votes,

Ray Charles received 3.5 votes,

Richard Wright, Roy Bittan, and Nicky Hopkins received 3 votes,

Bill Payne, Billy Joel and Diana Krall received 2.5 votes,

Billy Powell, Greg Allman, Garth Hudson, Warren Zevon, Eddie Van Halen, George Gershwin, John Paul Jones, Dave Brubeck, and Johann Sebastian Bach received 2 votes,

John Evan and Tori Amos received 1.5 votes,

Little Richard, Floyd Cramer, Mickey Gilley, Jimmy Smith, Ken Hensley, Chris Stainton, Chuck Leavell, Bob Van Camp, Rabbit Bundrick, Dave Brubeck, Vince Guaraldi, Thomas Dolby, Allen Evans, Brian Eno, Ed Harsch, Ian Stewart, Edgar Winter, Clifford Carte, Jan Hammer, Seth Justman, Bob James, Stan Kenton, Beethoven, Jordan Rudess, Bill Evans, McCoy Tyner, Oscar Peterson, Keith Jarrett, Joey DeFransesco, Glenn Guild, Stanislav Bunin, Bill Bryne, Lyle Mays, Roger Hodgson, Kerry Minnear, Joni Mitchell, Greg Rollie, George Duke, and Joe Jackson received 1 vote,

and Vince Clark, Andrew Fletcher, Alan Wilder, Donald Fagen, James Newton, Johnie Johnson, Robert Fripp, Michael Pindar, Ian Hunter, Bryan Ferry, John Locke, Leo Lyons, Vince Welnick, and Michael Cotton received .5 votes.

The Muffin Man also received one vote...

I must admit that I've never even heard of about half of the keyboardists mentioned.  Therefore, if I made a mistake tallying votes (due to multiple names, etc. or any other reason) please notify me so I can fix it (again).

Since 32 keyboardists received 1.5 votes or more, these 32 will enter the elimination rounds.  Seeding is based on total # of votes.  I broke all ties by choosing the keyboardist who I thought was more important towards making music what it is today.  Here are the Round 1 matchups (seeding in parenthesis)

(1) Rick Wakeman vs. (32) Tori Amos

(16) Richard Wright vs. (17) Nicky Hopkins

(8) Al Kooper vs. (25) Greg Allman

(9) Jerry Lee Lewis vs. (24) Billy Powell

(5) Elton John vs. (28) Warren Zevon

(12) Tony Banks vs. (21) Diana Krall

(4) Ray Manzarek vs. (29) Eddie Van Halen

(13) Leon Russell vs. (20) Billy Joel

(6) Herbie Hancock vs. (27) Garth Hudson

(11) Billy Preston vs. (22) Johann Sebastian Bach

(3) Keith Emerson vs. (30) John Paul Jones

(14) Chick Corea vs. (19) Bill Payne

(10) Steve Winwood vs. (23) Dave Brubeck

(7) Jon Lord vs. (26) George Gershwin

(15) Ray Charles vs. (18) Roy Bittan

(2) Stevie Wonder vs. (31) John Evan

Note: I'm not sure if this is like the other music - related vote offs on here, but this tournament will be set up "March Madness Style" as opposed to, say, "Stanley Cup Playoff Style."  This means that the above matchups should be envisioned as if in a bracket and the best seed remaining does not necessarily play the worst seed remaining.

Once again, I will only vote if there is a tie.  Voting for Round 1 will close on Monday, July 7, at 11 AM EST.

Happy Posting! (and sorry for the mistakes)
